Το Χαϊκού είναι μια ιδιαίτερη μορφή ποίησης του Ζεν, στην οποία ο ποιητής πρέπει να... απουσιάζει και μόνο το χαϊκού να είναι παρόν, έτσι ώστε να μην υπάρχει επινόηση, ή απώτερο κίνητρο. Αποτελείται ατό 17 συλλαβές μέσα στις οποίες τίθεται 

το πιο μεγαλειώδες συναίσθημα που μπορούν να νοιώσουν τα ανθρώπινα όντα. Ένα Χαϊκού είναι η έκφραση μιας παροδικής φώτισης στην οποία βλέπουμε μέσα στη ζωή των πραγμάτων. Ο Μπασό (17ος αιώνας) είναι ένας από τους πιο φημισμένους ποιητές χαϊκού.
