Πάψετε πια να εκπέμπετε το σήμα του κινδύνου,
τους γόους της υστερικής σειρήνας σταματήστε,
κι αφήστε το πηδάλιο στις τρικυμίας τα χέρια!
Το πιο φριχτό ναυάγιο θα ήταν να σωθούμε!

Τι; Πάλι να γυρίσουμε στην βαρετήν Ιθάκη,
στις μίζερες τις έγνοιες μας και τις φτηνές χαρές μας,
και στην πιστή τη σύντροφο, που σαν ιστόν αράχνης
ύφαινε την αγάπη της γύρω από τη ζωή μας;

Πάλι να ξέρουμε από πριν το αύριο τι θάναι
και να μη νοιώθουμε καμμιά λαχτάρα ν’ ανατέλλει;
Πάλι σαν τους ανήλιαστους καρπούς, που μαραζώνουν
και πέφτουν σάπιοι καταγής, να μοιάζουν τα όνειρά μας;

Η τόλμη αφού μας έλλειψε – και θα μας λείπει πάντα! -
να βγούμε μόνοι απ’τη στενή και τη στρωτή μας κοίτη,
κ’ ελεύθεροι, σαν άνθρωποι στη χαραυγή του κόσμου,
τους άγνωστους να πάρουμε και τους μεγάλους δρόμους
μ’ανάλαφρη περπατησιά σαν του πουλιού στο χώμα
και την ψυχή μας ριγηλή σα φυλλωσιά στην αύρα,
τουλάχιστο ας μη χάσουμε την ευκαιρία τώρα
το παίγνιο να γίνουμε των άγριων των κυμάτων -

κι όπου το φέρει! Ως πλόκαμοι μπορούν να μας τραβήξουν
τα κύματα της θάλασσας τα σκοτεινά τα βύθη,
μα και μπορούν στη φόρα τους να μας σηκώσουν τόσο
ψηλα, που με το μέτωπο ν’αγγίξουμε τ’ αστέρια!..
