Ελέφαντας και Χελώνα

Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό, τον πολύ παλιό καιρό, όταν στον κόσμο υπήρχε μόνο ημέρα και η νύχτα ήταν άγνωστη, ο Ελέφαντας και η Χελώνα μάλωσαν άσχημα. Αιτία ήταν το πλούσιο γρασίδι ενός λιβαδιού. «Είναι δικό μου!» έλεγε η Χελώνα. «Οχι, είναι δικό μου!» επέμενε ο Ελέφαντας. Κανένας δεν υποχωρούσε, ώσπου, στο τέλος, ο Ελέφαντας θύμωσε πολύ. «Θα σου σπάσω το καύκαλο!» φώναξε και σήκωσε το πόδι του να χτυπήσει τη Χελώνα. Εκείνη, κατατρομαγμένη, έτρεξε να κρυφτεί ανάμεσα στους θάμνους της σαβάνας και κρύφτηκε τόσο καλά, που ο Ελέφαντας δεν κατάφερε να τη βρει. Ομως, την άλλη μέρα, ο Ελέφαντας ζήτησε τη βοήθεια των υπόλοιπων ζώων, κι όλοι μαζί ξεκίνησαν για να την ξετρυπώσουν και να την τιμωρήσουν.

Στο μεταξύ η Χελώνα, που ήταν έξυπνη και ήξερε πολλά μαγικά, βλέποντας ότι δεν μπορούσε να ξεφύγει, άρπαξε τη σκόνη και την πέταξε στον άνεμο. Τότε η νύχτα, που όπως είπαμε ήταν άγνωστη ώς εκείνη τη στιγμή, σκέπασε τη γη...

Τα ζώα, μη βλέποντας πια τον ήλιο, τρομοκρατήθηκαν. «Τι πυκνό σκοτάδι!», έλεγαν το ένα στο άλλο. «Τι έγινε ο ήλιος, πού πήγε η μέρα; Πώς θα ζήσουμε τώρα χωρίς φως;». Ο Ελέφαντας, καταστενοχωρημένος, θέλησε να διορθώσει τα πράγματα. Εστειλε τον Κόκορα να ζητήσει συγγνώμη από τη Χελώνα και να την παρακαλέσει να ξαναφέρει τη μέρα στον κόσμο. Ο Κόκορας ζήτησε από τη Χελώνα να συγχωρήσει τον Ελέφαντα, κι εκείνη δέχτηκε, φέρνοντας και πάλι τον ήλιο στον ουρανό. Ομως από τότε οι μέρες δεν είναι πια πάντα ηλιόλουστες και το φως δίνει τη θέση του στο σκοτάδι κάθε νύχτα.
