JOURNEY REVELATION

REVELATION should bookmark one of the most challenging chapters of Journey’s legendary career. Instead, the new album offers a lasting testament to Journey’s legacy and a striking glimpse of their brilliant future.

The first album with lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, REVELATION is Journey running on no less than twelve cylinders, a fine-tuned offering that sounds every bit like a band hitting their stride. Yet Pineda hadn’t even joined the band when the album’s first songs were written in mid-2007, and founding guitarist Neal Schon is quick to admit, it wasn’t always easy to stay optimistic when the band wasn’t sure what the future held.

“I was getting frustrated with not having a singer, but still wanted to move forward and knew that we had a big year in front of us. There were times I got frustrated, but I never lost hope,” recalls Schon. “I wanted a guy that could convey the classic songs with a similar texture to his voice, and a tenor voice, but someone who puts his own spin on it. Which is exactly what Arnel does.”

Pineda’s discovery is already etched into Journey’s lifelong musical history, as Schon scouted literally hundreds of singers via online video website YouTube before finding the band’s new frontman. “When I heard Arnel, I knew I had found our singer and immediately called management,” says Schon. “Next, I call Cain. And before we knew it, Arnel was on his way to the U.S. to audition. By the third day of full rehearsals with the band, it was a slam-dunk. Then, we proceeded into the studio where Arnel sang six Journey songs in one day. He sounded simply amazing. I looked at Cain and said, ‘there he is. This is our guy.’" Cain agreed.

Between the two of them, Schon and Cain penned all 11 of the new tracks on REVELATION. There is no lack of chemistry in Journey, beginning with the songwriting core of Schon and Cain. “I felt strongly about moving forward and writing new material. It was time,” Schon states. Schon then put the call into Cain and started the song writing process which has now become the album, REVELATION. “There’s an innate trust and respect for what we each do as we weave our way through this music,” says Cain. Schon adds, “In the alphabet, I might be a Z and Jonathan the A, that’s just how opposite we are musically sometimes. I write mostly rock and Jonathan writes most of the ballads, but when you combine the chemistry of us together, you’ll find that it is the nucleus and sound of what is and has been Journey. And now, with the right voice in place, we have all the right ingredients.” Cain adds, “We’ve been doing this for so long together, we both know what we want to hear, and we both know what works for the band.” Neal agrees. “By now I think we should be able to do it in our sleep.”

“Never Walk Away” kicks REVELATION off with the resilient air and upbeat optimism fans have come to expect from Journey, a melody-soaked and guitar-driven anthem sure to ignite the live circuit just as it lights up the new release. The heartwarming sentiment offered by “Like a Sunshower” gives a more poetic and reflective look at relationships. It’s an uncharacteristic ballad from the more hard rock-inclined Schon. There’s even an instrumental, “The Journey (Revelation),” at the request of producer Kevin Shirley, who returns to the fold after working with the band on TRIAL BY FIRE (1996) and ARRIVAL (2000), the band’s first instrumental since DEPARTURE (1980) and EVOLUTION (1979). “This is a special song for me,” Schon says of the sprawling track, “it was extremely gratifying to express myself on my instrument in this way.” This is a great performance from everyone in the band and truly a majestic track.

Lead singer Pineda still does plenty of head turning of his own throughout the new recordings, as well as the 11 classic hits that the band re-recorded.

“It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world,” says Pineda. “It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part, and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore Journey fans. I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like ‘the voice,’ but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world.” While that may be the case, Pineda breathes new life into the band’s heralded catalog, from the soaring stretches of “Only The Young” and the full vibrato that introduces the small town girl and city boy from South Detroit in “Don’t Stop Believin’,” to the pristine tones of “Open Arms” and “Faithfully” and the driving rhythm of “Separate Ways.”

“Not only can he cover our old material, but he’s such a diversified performer that it leaves everything wide open to where we can go,” marvelled Schon of his new singer. “He’s got tremendous abilities and he’s an outstanding performer, which people will soon find out.”

Not to be outdone, every member of Journey shines on REVELATION. Cain’s keyboards elevate “After All These Years” to new emotional heights. “What I Needed” is a power ballad, driven by heavy guitars, reminiscent of the early Journey that so many bands have modelled themselves after. Deen Castronovo drums up a frenzy during the hard-driving rock song, “Wildest Dream.” The talented Castronovo also sings most of the high harmonies heard throughout the album, proving that not only is he an amazing drummer, but he’s a dynamic vocalist as well. Schon’s smoking guitars rip through this track with a cool, eastern flavour. Bassist Ross Valory is steady throughout, a stabilizing force through the albums more driven highs and heartfelt lows.

RAMONES AND KISS PLAY WITH PEARL JAM IN NYC Pearl Jam Eddie Vader performs Pearl Jam hits in Madison Square Garden

Pearl Jam collaborated with members of Kiss and The Ramones in New York last night (June 25) to cover two classic tracks.

Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and Ramones bassist C.J. Ramone were drafted in for guest appearances during the second of a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden.

Frehley turned up to play lead guitar on Kiss' "Black Diamond" and C.J. Ramone played on "I Believe in Miracles".

Frontman Eddie Vedder also thanked his guitar tech, Ricky Ramone, who had long worked for the late Johnny Ramone before joining Pearl Jam.

The sets went heavy on material from the band's first three albums, with hits like "Alive," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Corduroy" and "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" balanced by deep cuts such as "Leash," "Rats," "Whipping" and "Garden."

UNHEARD THIN LIZZY LIVE ALBUM Thin Lizzy Historic recording from 1975 gets re-mastered

Thin Lizzy will release a new live album of their "UK Tour 75" including four unheard live tracks.

The original recordings were made over one night for broadcast on the radio and the pristine ¼" master tape has been transferred and re-mastered with the band’s supervision.

The 15-track album features the ‘classic’ Thin Lizzy lineup - Phil Lynott on vocals and bass guitar, Brian Downey on percussion, Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson playing dual lead guitar – performing at Derby College on November 21 1975.

“In 1975, the band had decided on a different attitude, to change to a harder rock sound,” said Brian Downey.

“The softer songs from the previous album ‘Nightlife’ were to be replaced by more stage-orientated songs, as we planned to put our rock’n’roll stamp on the next album ‘Fighting’.”

One of the rare tracks on the album is an early prototype version of the ‘Cowboy Song’ and a version of 'Little Darling', which was dropped from their live set soon after their 1975 tour.

The band had been on the road since releasingFighting a few months before they hit international success with Jailbreak.

The deluxe album includes a 20-page booklet of unseen photos, liner notes written by Brian Downey and extra material of the band jamming during their sound check.

Tracklisting:

‘Fighting My Way Back’
‘It’s Only Money’
‘Wild One’
‘For Those Who Love To Live’
‘Showdown’
‘Still In Love With You’
‘Suicide’
‘Rosalie’
‘The Rocker’
‘Sha La La’

All-female punk rock dance group, the Darling Stilettos

The all-female trailblazing punk rock dance troupe Darling Stilettos have been wowing Los Angeles audiences of late with their attention-grabbing, attitudinal moves set to enduring tunes by punk and hard rock gods. With their strong dose of sexuality, the gals — Ace, Gina, Jersey, Lindsey and Megan — raised the temperature at the weekly Camp Freddy residency throughout the month of May at The Roxy in West Hollywood; they’ve also performed gigs with Steel Panther (formerly Metal Skool).

Darling Stilettos are now in talks with various labels while recording songs for their debut CD at Drac Studios in Los Angeles with producers Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N’ Roses, The Cult) and Stevie Salas (guitarist for Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, George Clinton). The group are searching for a lead singer and they recently debuted their website: www.darlingstilettos.com

Principal choreographer and rock diva Ace Harper — a former dancer for the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Motley Crue and Velvet Revolver — says of the Darling Stilettos live performance: “Each girl draws you in with her allure and powerful moves,” she continues. “We have such a great chemistry onstage; our energy just bounces off one another.”

This youthful, punk rock dance quintet is managed by Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum and clad in original outfits made by Corey Parks of Nashville Pussy. “I think of it as West Side Story meets Sex Pistols,” says Sorum of the Stilettos’ rock & roll dance moves. “Here they are: girls in their early twenties who grew up with their Mom and Dad’s records: The Clash, Ramones, Generation X. All the cool shit. And they’re taking the stage and doing rock & roll steps. It’s not pop. It’s edgy, it’s punky, it’s gang-like.”

Born in the early 1980s, these Dionysian debutantes of rock & roll first got their hands on their parents’ record collections and never looked back. Using Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll” as a call to arms, the respective members of Darling Stilettos discovered Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, AC/DC and countless others. Finding inspiration from the fashion, spirit and freewheeling savoir-faire of Bridget Bardot, among others, the rebellious spirits of Darling Stilettos’ respective members took flight.

With an ability to turn heads — even girls’ heads — Darling Stilettos balance their “drive to fucking rock with a charisma that draws people in,” Gina says. “You may have expected some hot girls prancing around, but we really raise the temperature in the room. We are so alive and in your face.”

Ted Nugent to celebrate 6000th gig July 4

Get ready America, for the historic 6000th concert of Ted Nugent’s career: a massive Friday, July 4 blowout at the outdoor DTE Energy Amphitheater in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.

“It is guaranteed to be the most emotional, sensual, grind fest of what you’ve witnessed on the ‘Rolling Thunder Tour’ so far — the highest level of energy from anybody, anywhere, anytime,” says rock’s legendary guitar frontman and virtuoso, currently on his 50th tour that will take him through September 27.

“I was born and raised in Detroit in the shadow of the mighty Funk Brothers and I was taught the ropes of Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Mose Allison, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. I started playing back there under the guidance of Joe Podorsek, my guitar teacher from the Capitol School of Music on Grand River Avenue, in 1957. My first performance was at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in the summer of 1958 with Joe Podorsek and the Capitol School of Music Revue. I don’t remember such a level of fear in all my life, as I wasn’t quite 10 years old. And to return on Independence Day is rather demonstrative of my American dream firestorm for almost 60 years. The feeling will be indescribable. And to have Greg Smith on bass and Mick Brown on drums,” adds Uncle Ted, “will once again prove that God loves me more than he loves you because he keeps sending me these unbelievable world-class virtuosos to propel and throttle.”

Continues Ted: “Michiganiacs demand maximum excellence—they are the ultimate demanding and discerning audience in the world. I have a connection with those music lovers that is personified in the borders of Michigan, and this show is going to be a mountain top that most musicians can only fantasize about.”

Watch Judas Priest’s “War” video

According to a posting on the MTV2’s Headbanger’s Blog, the video “features witches practicing magic then being burned at the stake, a tyrannical ruler exerting fascist control, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse storming through the sky, fire spreading across the earth, winged beasts reigning destruction and lots more imagery that would have make Hieronymus Bosch giddy with delight.” Watch the video below. Josh Homme Is Never Too Sick To Fight

Josh Homme, one of our favorite living rock stars, flipped the fuck out on a kid who threw a bottle at the Norwegian Wood festival Queens Of The Stone Age played last weekend. And it all got caught on tape.

“Do me one favor, though. Don’t throw any shit at me. You throw something at me, I’m not so sick that I can’t go down there and beat the fucking shit out of you, you know what I’m saying? I may have a fucking 102° temperature and been puking for three days, but I’ll still butt-fuck you in front of all your friends. [Spots the culprit in the crowd] Hey, you, right there… Hey, you, with the fucking hat on! Hey, pussy! Turn around, you fucking pussy with the black hair! Turn the fuck around, you chickenshit fucking faggot! Hey, you- you fucking pussy motherfucker! I will fuck you up! C’mon up here! C’mon up here, you fucking little faggot! You know what?! Get your fucking ass up here! You’re so stupid you’ll come up here. Lift him up so that I can kick him in the fucking face. [Throws something at the kid] Invisible fucking cunt. Go back to your mom’s house, you 12-year-old dickless fucking turd! And his friends, you wanna throw something too or are you all cool? You’re all good? You know this dickless fucking turd has no friends anyway, man. I came here for the rest of you- not for this asshole.”

Purported New Guns N' Roses Tracks Hit The Web

June 19, 2008 - Rock and Pop
By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. Nine purported "mastered, finished" tracks from Guns N' Roses' 14-years-in-the-making album "Chinese Democracy" were leaked online yesterday (June 18) by the Web site Antiquiet.com, prompting a quick cease-and-desist from the band's handlers and the removal of the links. Six of the songs have already leaked in one unfinished form or another: "Better," "The Blues," the title track, "Madagascar," "IRS" and "There Was a Time." But these versions appear to be much further along on the path toward completion, and feature new touches like organ and tambourine on "IRS" and a beefed-up chorus with multi-tracked vocals on "Madagascar." The three previously unheard songs are "Rhiad and the Bedouins," "If the World" and a track whose title is unknown. "Rhiad," which was played live by Guns N' Roses in 2001 and 2002, is a pounding rocker with a trademark down-and-dirty main guitar riff and a flashy solo. "If the World" is a head-spinning blend of flamenco guitar, industrial synth tones, bluesy piano licks and Rose at the top of his vocal register, while the unnamed track is an even more unusual melange of piano-led crooning, orchestral bombast and a serene instrumental outtro. "Chinese Democracy" was last on Interscope's release schedule in March 2007. In late March of this year, the Axl Rose-led band signed a new management deal with industry heavyweights Irving Azoff and Andy Gould and began what it described as "negotiations" with Interscope to release the album. But even if its release is drawing near, "Chinese Democracy" will likely go down as the album with the most troubled birth in rock history. Work began on it way back in 1994, and since then, Rose has burned through a reported $13 million in production costs as well as every lone original member of the group. The endless delays reached comic levels this spring, when soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper offered to send a free can of the drink to "everyone in America" (excluding ex-GNR members Slash and Buckethead) if "Chinese Democracy" arrives anytime during the calendar year 2008.
